Change Font Color
Quick Tip
v6
Quickly change the font color
|
- I have always been bugged by how difficult it is to change the font color. Here is an easier approach. Enter layout mode and select the field you want to change. Then, hold down the Option key (Mac) or Alt key (Win) while selecting a line color. FileMaker Pro 5.0 for Windows has changed the keyboard equivalent to the Ctrl key.

Date Search Techniques
Quick Tip

New FileMaker 8 Date Search Techniques
|
- Some of the new date search features in FileMaker Pro 8 are just what I've always wanted. For example, you can type in a range of "Monday...Friday" or "Mon...Fri" to locate all weekday dates. Or, you can use wildcards to locates all dates on January 1st, regardless of the year, by typing "1/1/*". You can use curly brackets to specify a range of months, such as "{1...6}/*/* to locate all the birthdays in the first 6 months of the year. Try these same wildcard techniques with time fields too. Play around with these tools, and I'm sure you'll be impressed with the flexibility. And let me know if you figure out some combination of these new features that let's you accomplish some really cool technique.

Portal Pop
Quick Tip
v7
Eliminate Portal Pop in FileMaker Pro 7
|
- In FileMaker Pro 6 and earlier versions, portals scroll back to the top row whenever you click outside the portal (e.g. into a field). This behavior is disconcerting for users who wish to keep the currently-scrolled position of the portal while they work somewhere else on the record. FileMaker Pro 7 solves this huge developer request right out of the box -- except in one scenario. If you click on the layout where there are no fields or type the Enter key on the keypad, the portal will still pop back to the top row. To eliminate this behavior: enter layout mode, open Layout Setup from the Layout menu, and then Uncheck the option to "show field frames when record is active". While this will remove the dotted or dashed lines around fields when a record is active, most developers add enough interface to make it easy to locate fields anyhow.

Hiding the Web Companion Interface
Quick Tip
v6
Create your own Custom Interface for Instant Web Publishing
|
- Up until FileMaker Pro 5.5, Instant Web Publishing required you to incorporate the Web Companion interface into your solution. Sure, you could create your own custom home page, but you had to work with the standard FileMaker-supplied interface for navigating databases. With the advent of FileMaker Pro 5.5, you can now suppress the web companion interface entirely. FileMaker Pro 5.5 supports open scripts; however, only the first two lines of the open script and just a subset of steps are recognized (See the online FileMaker help for a list of supported steps.) To suppress the interface, simply include Toggle Status Area [Hide] as one of the first two steps in your opening script. Now that you have hidden the interface, you will need to use the expanded capabilities of 5.5 to script actions such as go to next record, go to previous record, as well as other navigational aids.

Return Window to Origin
Quick Tip
v6
Make Windows Always Appear in Upper Left Corner
|
- If you are as meticulous as I am, it's nice to have your FileMaker windows in the upper left corner of the screen; such placement helps when moving from a larger screen to a smaller screen and it simply looks more professional. I've looked at AppleScript and other third party products, but the easiest method is to use two steps in your startup script. Use the Toggle Window step with the Maximize option followed by the Toggle Window step with the Zoom option. Maximizing your screen both fills the screen with your active window and also places it in the upper left corner. Zooming the screen reduces the window size to the farthest object at the right and the last part at the bottom.
