Hiding Menus  Mac  Win    Intermediate     Tip File    Version 11 v11
Use Custom Menus to Hide an Entire Menu
When Custom Menus first appeared in FileMaker Advanced, I presented a technique at the FileMaker Developer Conference for Dynamic Custom Menus. Instead of creating menus for every single layout or table, I was able to customize them with calculations to change based on the table attached to the current layout. For example, you could change the New Record menu item to New Customer or New Invoice without using multiple custom menus. The only thing I couldn’t do was remove a menu entirely. It was easy to remove a menu item by resulting in “” (blank) in a calculation formula. In the case of menus, they still appeared but with no name. With FileMaker 11, disappearing menus are now supported.   (29k)

Email PDF  Mac  Win    Intermediate     Tip File    Version 10 v10
Email a PDF Document
Lots of people ask me how to send a PDF document attached to an email so here it is. It uses the Get(TemporaryPath) function so the PDF documents are saved in a hidden folder that FileMaker cleans up for you.   (31k)

Totals by Page v3  Mac  Win    Advanced     Tip File    Version 9 v9
Totals at the Bottom of Each Page
The basic premise of this technique is to provide totals in the footer part. Getting a summary field to total by page without a subsummary part is a tricky endeavor. While this technique has been published previously, this version covers how to copy the values from the page. Thanks to Ray Cologon for submitting this technique.   (10k)

Padding Multiple Decimals  Mac  Win    Intermediate     Tip File    Version 7 v7
Pad Decimal Value for Sorting
Someone asked me how to pad numbers with multiple decimals so they would sort correctly as a text field. For example, you might have the value of "2.4.4.2" which you want to sort correctly. The formula in this technique file demonstrates how to convert the value to "002004004002".   (29k)

Credit Card Validation  Mac  Win    Intermediate   Tip File    Version 6 v6
Prevent typos when inputting credit card numbers
Validates credit card numbers. It doesn't tell you whether the credit card has cleared the bank, but rather serves as a way to prevent typos. The algorithm is able to determine if the digits in the card number follow the correct pattern.   (5k)
