Demonstrates how to create a fully-relational calendar from scratch. While this technique is far easier than previous techniques I've seen, it still requires a good working knowledge of relational design in FileMaker Pro.
I've seen a lot of calendar solutions out there but none that follow simple relational rules so you can search and report on it like you would a normal database solution. That doesn't even begin to cover the complicated calculations and scripts. While this solution requires a good working-knowledge of relational design in FileMaker 7 or 8, it is far easier than any other method on the market and it is truly relationally sound. While it is simple showing just a monthly calendar, you can easily add an events table using the same techniques shown in the example file.
I dusted off this solution originally submitted by Kieren Macmillan for FileMaker Pro 3.0 and updated it for version 7 and later. Not a ton has changed but enough that it would be difficult to convert the solution. In addition, I have also optimized it with the new features of the modern FileMaker product line.
Here are some very complicated custom functions that figure out holidays. One function figures out the holiday name based on a date input -- which would be great for a calendaring program -- and the other simply lists all the holidays for a specified year.

Inspired by the work of Kieren MacMillan’s calendar solution, André Ouwehand modified it to come up with a unique interpretation in order to allow drag and drop dates from the calendar (or, copy them).
Nick Eide downloaded my bar charting example and came up with this idea for creating Gantt charts using only FileMaker tools. Nick uses the Gantt charts in a calendar, but you could take the idea and make any type of graphical representation you desire.
Getting the difference between two dates in terms of months is as easy as using the Month function and basic subtraction. That’s true until you consider what happens when the dates span multiple years. This requires you to determine the number of whole years and multiply by 12 but that’s the easy part. What happens if the end date is from a month earlier on the calendar than start date. All of a sudden the formula gets a little more complicated.

I also showed how to color the portals in a monthly calendar without any overhead in the child file or scripts or calculations. I also demonstrate how to use GetNthRecord to accomplish tasks faster and better. There is a lot of FileMaker 8 material, but a good portion is FileMaker 7-only.
